I have an 86 4x4, 302. When I start the motor the starter continues to grind. I have replaced the starter, ignition switch, key tumbler, and relay switch.
Any help would be appreciated.
My brother has a 91 Mustang LX that does the same thing. I have heard of two ways to help solve the problem. You may want to contact your local auto electric shop (rebuiler of starters and alternators). They will know best how to deal with your problem.
1. Pull the starter off and place washers/shims between the starter and bellhousing. This will give the starter pinion less reach into the ring gear.
2. Use a grinder to slot the bottom hole on the starter. Push the bottom of the starter away from the block and tighten.
All to often I hear no mention of the difference between a manual or automatic starter. There is a difference and it is barely visible to the untrained eye.Start by verifying the rebuilders part# on the starter to the part# they sold you. Most of the time they are mis-boxed on the shelf. Also verify the application, manual or auto.If all of this checks out,try another starter before grinding or shimming.
Phillip
Phillip is correct.
Often two differant starter types are made for a particular engine.
Also some starters require the sham to be installed while others do not.
If the sham is needed and has not been installed this will create problems with the starter not being in the correct position which can eventually damage the engines fly wheel, because the starter does not disengauge from the fly wheel once the starter cog disengauges this will strip both cogs on the starter, and the fly wheel.
Also if the sham is not required and there is one installed it may cause the same type of damage.
This is primarily because depth needs to be pretty close for the starter to be mounted correctly,at a specific angle,to allow leadway for the starter to disengauge.
