IS there anyone out there who has herd of a rebuilt ranger engine eating
rotors. This has happened 4 times, the last one after replacing all the
gears from the pan up and a rebuilt distributor. The failure happens
suddenly and the rotor is in pieces. It happens after some good running
from 100 to 900 miles this last time
What brand of cap & rotor are you going with? Not to judge the quality, but I say to try a totally different brand of cap & rotor. You see, all of these are manufactured with CNC machines and sometimes the measurements are just not dialed in correctly for a batch of a certain product.I was wondering if you could see the gouging of the the cap by the rotor tip when it strikes the cap? I have seen a lot of rotor tips just come off because of poor fusion to the body of the rotor.

I had a Toyota that ate rotors. This strange phenomenom started shortly after a poor engine rebuild. (i will spare you the details of the rebuild gone bad). Here is what the problem turned out to be. There was excessive blow by due to the rings not seating properly. This blow by was so excessive that the "dirty air" was being forced out of every crack and crevice. In fact the air was sneaking up the distributor shaft and depositing moisture and debris on the inside of my cap. The excess moisture caused the center contact point to corrode and become rough. Within a short period of time the center contact would wear itself down to a nub. I replaced the rings and the problem went away. Let me know how this turns out. I tried several different rotor brands and nothing helped except fixing the basic blow by problem. Make sure your PCV system is working correctly and not clogged.
