dont recall GM making a 302, just a 305 but i could be wrong.
certainly did. it was a destroked 327 in the 67-69 camaro's and it was pretty doggone mean.
Course the small size of the camaro probaaly had alot to do with it.

"There's a little red button there,kid...don't ever, ever touch the red button!"
Yeah. that Boss 429. Never seen one but i always heard they was mean with capital letters. The GM 302 was a de-stroked 327 in 67-69 camaros(Z-28 ?) I owned one of these engines and put it into a 79 Sunbird that had the V-8 option orig. I was warned to connect the sub-frame sections, but did not. After hammering the throttle a few times the little car started limping on three legs. The body twisted for some reason.
I don't know the true HP or torque of that engine but the man who rebuilt it for me said it was around 475/450. That is questionable, for i never had the engine dyno'd. The engine was mostly stock. Just a little "bigger" carborator. Everything else was supposed to be ordered as stock parts.
If I can remember correctly. The stroke was around 2 3/4"-3".
Oh yeah. The Montego. It certainly did seem to run very good.
It did'nt act like it had any problems. Big and heavy is right.
You could fit about 15 teen-agers in one of those ol'sleads. If you really had too. And load all party/camp gear in the trunk.
Just for referance GM also built a 307 in Chevys. And a 301 for Pontiac. Seams like there was a 303 for Olds.
I've seen 429 Boss engines in show cars here around home and man are they a HUGE engine. The heads take up a lot of space. And they sound beautiful, even though the ones I heard were only idling. Just by the sound you could tell they are a deep-breathng engine and have no problem kicking butt I'm sure.
My buddy's parents had a 4-door Chevelle and it had a 307 in it. At the time my he was only 16....he raced a guy who was driving a Mustang, for 40 miles and beat him, and he had 4 other people in the car with him. Realistically it was probably a matter of him fearing death less than the other guy, than his car actually being faster than the Mustang...
