I am possibly looking at getting a car. I had a truck and sold it and was going to get a company truck but that didn't work out. So I am moving on.
I found a 2002 Ford Focus SE for $12,900 (Canadian). That includes taxes and fees. It is already safety checked and emissions tested.
It is a 4 door with 40,000 KILOMETRES. It has power steering, power windows, power locks, cruise control, CD, and is an automatic. The car is in excellent shape. Even has brand new tires (well, no more than 1000 KM on them). And has a 2 year powertrain warrenty.
Is that a good price? (I thought it was). What engine would a SE model have? I know it is a 4 banger.
Any known problems I should look out for? I know that around 2002 is when they started to get reliable (don't get one older than that).
Are the transmissions (autos) fairly good? It will just be a daily driver. I am tired of stick shift especially with living in the city.
Im dont think I would say any of the Focus' are unreliable. A friend of mine have an '00 Focus SE with 120,000 miles on it and it hasnt give it's owner a moment of trouble. Change the oil every 3,000 miles, replace the air filter once a year, changed the timing belt at 100,000 miles and rotate the tires every 5,000 miles and its been good to go.
I think the SE just has the standard 2.0L 8-valve, 120-hp motor (Im not 100% sure on those specs, so correct me if Im wrong).
I think you would be OK with the auto tranny. It wont be fast with that tranny, but it will get you where you wanna go. If you can drive a stick-shift, I would try to go that route. A 5-speed will be a little bit quicker and get better fuel milage. However,if you do a lot of city driving, an automatic might be the better choice.
Octane
Why spend that much for a three year old car when you can buy a newer Focus for about the same amount of money with a lower interest rate, longer loan period, and OEM warranty?
> It has power steering, power windows, power locks, cruise control, CD, and is an automatic
Except for the CD and automatic, isn't that standard equipment on a Focus?
The same Focus but brand new would be about $20,000 Canadian. The one I was looking at was $13,000 Canadian. Probably equal to $10,500-11,000 American.
I bought one for my wife as a commuter so she would'nt have to
put miles on her exped, hers is a 03' and not a lick of trouble yet.
I would look into a new one which was mention earlier, not sure of the exchange rate on us-can money but seems to me at that
price new would be not much more good luck good car.
Beast, that price doesn't sound out of line from what I've seen, especially since it includes all the taxes and such. I think all the options you quoted are standard fare on a Focus. From what I've read, the 2001 up are good, it's the 2000 you need to avoid. The only thing that bothers me about this one you are looking at, how come it already has new tires at 40k? Did the person leasing it drive the crap out of it? BTW, what tires are they? The dealer we bought ours from put X-One tires (I think, or some other similar high-end tire) and they still look really good 50k later.
I had to change the tires on both my '95 Tracer and '99 Escort at about 35K miles. They don't come new with really good ones. If it had 40K miles, I'd much rather see new ones on it. Saves you having to buy a set right away.
they are good cars. my mom is on her second. she had an 00 SE fully loaded and loved it. Now she has an 03 SVT and loves it more.
The SE came witht he base motor but the 2.0 z-tec was an option. if you lift the hood and the valve cover is black it has the good motor. if its silve is the slow lane for you buddy.
the autos are good and give decent shifts for a 4 cyl auto.
they handle great and id buy one if i needed a cheap car to commute with.
Well, I went and looked at it again today. I took it for a test drive and the front brakes felt kind of weird. But, there was some rust on the rotors (for sitting for a while) and that's probably the problem. It seemed to be mostly gone when I got back after the drive.
So, the car includes a Ford Bumper to bumper warranty that is good until the end of the year. He said the powertrain warranty is from Ford as well and it still has 2 years left on it. Is it true they have a 5 year powertrain warranty? I guess all I would need to do it get it transferred into my name.
The car is already saftied and emissions tested. But, they give it one last check over before they sell it. They also put plates and all that stuff on it for me as well (included in the $12,900 drive away price) * Canadian dollars.
Oh, it has the 16V 2.0L Zetec engine. So, is there anything I should look out for? I am 90% sure I am going to get it but just wanted to double check with you guys'.
And before you give Matt a hard time over the price, remember it includes 15% tax.
We just had the first problem come up with our Focus, it was surging in 3rd gear and then check engine light came on. Did some research at focusfanatics, and apparently it's relatively common, problems with the DPFE sensor and/or EGR valve. So I unhooked the EGR valve and plugged the hose, no more surging. So now I need to get the codes read and spend a couple bucks on a new sensor. Sorry about sidetracking.
Sidetracking, not a problem. I need to know these things because I bought it. They are doing one last inspection on it as well as an oil change. It only had one key with it so they are going to make me another for free. Good deal considering how much they cost!
I am going back in today to pick it up. I will post pics when I get some.
