Unhappy ring and pinion

hello to all ford truck owners ,, i have a 1972 ford f100 4x4 that has , what i've been told a 9 3/8ths set of gears in the rear end the ring gear measures from across the center 5 3/4 and from bolt hole to bolt hole 6 1/2 and the ring gear is alot thicker than a standard 9 inch ,,, my problem is finding a good used or even new set of them without changing anything ,,,,, any help and or advise would be greatly appreciated,,,,,,, thank you

the thing about changing just the gears is the rear end gears cant be just bolted in. they have to be set up properly. there are shops that will do this but its usually not cheap. if you have to have new. and you've never done this then have it done by a shop. if you want out cheap look for another center chunk, check them for the same gear set and install it yourself. you could do this in a couple hours. good luck.

KYdude, Welcome to FTE The best truck show on the net.

I fear that you have been given bad advice. Sounds like you have been talking to some air head bowtie owner. There is no such animal as you describe.

For the 1/2 ton 5 lug wheel, Ford mostly used the 9" with a few Dana 44s scattered in. The 9" available in 28 & 31 spline axles was offered across the Ford family. Because of it's ease of swapping it is what Nascar uses today in it's race cars, although highly modified.

The 9" comes with different ratios, that can be swapped in & out of the rear housing as long as the axle spline remains the same.

Ol Kevin has put up a pretty good page on the rear http://www.kevinstang.com/Ninecase.htm Hope you can find something there to put you back on the path.

John

There is an odd 9in that the gears do not work in most 9in cases and if I
remember right its an old lincoln, may be a older thunderbird, but i'm real sure
that its the older lincoln, if I do remember right the gear is like 9 3/4 .
The web page posted above is a very good one heres one also.

http://www.fnc.ch/Technik/9-Inch_rebuild.htm

P.S the thick gear is just a low gear, I think the low thick gears start at about 3.50, I think but not sure that 3.25 is thin,i'm sure that a 3.00 is thin!

And Welcome to (FTE)!

What country is that site located in?

I never heard of any 9 3/4 rears in pickups, but what do I know.

Here is another good link for 9 in housings.......

http://dfwmotorsport.com/Fairlane/9inchrearends.htm

if you look down to the line about the 63 to 77 Lincoln,Thunderbirds, and LTD's you will see that they came out with a Ford 9.375 in center.

as you know hogsheads get swapped around all the time as do rearends.

This is news to me. I have never heard of a 9 & 3/4 rear before. I am not sure what that author means with his comment.

I don't want to get into any kind of peeing contest over the issue. I read these forums everyday, and can't recall anything about this size rear.

Maybe someone else has.

I think that the person that wrote ''but no gears'' on the web site I posted they meant that there are
no after market gears, spools, parts. I would like to know if these hogs heads
fit in a normal rearend housing ,because in the past I have just installed car
hogs heads in trucks and never knew that this could happen. I am in the
middle of going though boxes of magazines and sorting them better, I am looking
for the one I saw this in, I do remember that the front of the housing has a
odd ( web ) across it that sort of waves down on one side.there is a pic in
the magazine that its in.

P.S I did not want to offend any one but any time that we (all) can learn
more it has to make this great site even ( greater )!

I've read a little about them in researching a couple of things.

Another link explaining their origin and identifying marks:

http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/48618/index13.html

As Pro-Street said, the right side has a web that sort of veers downward, it's pretty unique. The article I quote up there also states that a 9 3/8" 3rd member will fit in a 9" housing if you notch the housing a little.

A standard 9" pumpkin should fit just fine in your rear axle. If you get an new pumpkin, make sure the axle splines are the same as your rear axles.

Definitely! If you truly have a 9 3/8" rear, it should be 31-spline, so make sure the carrier you get in your 3rd member is set up for that. You might have whomever is setting up your gears compare the carrier bearings and side gears between the two 3rd members. It sounds like you have all of the pieces to make this work.
