Have a 2004 6L. today it started makeing a noise when I punch the excelerator when going round 40MPH and get tach. up to 2000 or so. it sounds like a fan hitting something when I release the foot peddle. Just like a blade hits something 4 or 5 times then stops. Will not do it when setting still ofcouse afraid to get it up 2 2000 rpm why sitting still. Has anyone got any thoughs on this. only a wild guess that it is turbo Thanks for your help
Does it sound like the engine fan blade or the turbocharger impeller? Check the engine fan first for loose nuts or fan misallignment. You'll have to have someone work the accelerator while you have the hood open so you can see how much travel (if any) the engine fan blade has up to and past the 2000 rpm mark. So yes, you'll have to rev your motor to 2000 rpm's! But, be safe and do this parked in your driveway or some place safe. Make sure the truck's in PARK and the E-brake is on! I was not suggesting that you'd have to watch the fan blade while the truck is in motion!!!
Could also be the fan shroud is loose or some of the other shrouding is loose so it flops around and hits once you go fast enough (ie, 40 mph). Check the plastic snaps that hold the shrouding and fascia together under the hood. It may just be that if something's loose, once it catches enough wind velocity (ie again, @ 40 mph) that that is enough turbulence to make it slap around.
If none of these ideas pan-out, I recall hearing recently of a TSB regarding a Ford recall of over 260,000 vehicles (SD's included) for faulty injectors. Maybe you have a bad injector and it's causing the turbo to malfunction??? That's just a W.A.G., but who knows???
Good luck with it and I hope it's something inexpensive or something that Ford fixes for free!
