Cool boating

well it looks like it's going to happen. c.a.r.b. and the us coast guard are going to start testing cat convertors on boat engines. i can't figure out how they will make it work with the heat a cat makes and the confined space of a boats motor area.
how closed are the fuel systems going to need to be be with the bilge areas always holding some gas vapors as it is. and all the extra heat.
my guesses are no more carbs to play with even on a boat, as how else can they contain vapors tightly with out f.i.
also i have been checking out the cummins-mercruiser, yanmar web site's and the diesel i.o. list keeps getting bigger. while the rumor mill from mercury says maybe no more 2 stroke out boards shortly from us.
guess we are not even going to play h.p. goose on our boats much longer.

Yeah, everything is going south in that respect...all motorsports. Snowmobiling is changing too, eventually there won't be many 2 strokes left.

The thing about a boat, is that you want it to be simplistic and easy to fix if something goes wrong. There are only a few things that could go wrong with a carb setup that one couldn't fix...EFI isn't a great idea in a boat. Outboards are a little different, but having an EFI engine in the bidge, I'd be worrying about electrical connections and sensors being screwed up by salt water.

I'm sure they'll find a way to get more and more restrictive on engines.

I wouldn;t discount the 2 strokes yet. Evinrude's new E-Tec line actually exceeds the requirements for 2008..

On edit:
<a href="http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/E-Tec/E-TEC.Advantage/Cleaner.Quieter.htm" target=new>Here is a link</a>

stupid tree huggers. you know, i realized something funny the other day while we were out cruising timber. the people that are actually out there hugging trees? They're the ones cuttin em down! But seriously, i heard a while ago they were even testing cats on LAWNMOWERS. How stupid is that? There is another company thats figured out a way to supercharge (i use that word/definition in this circumstance loosely) their weed eater engine. Basically they have an extra port that forces a little more air in the cylinder at just the right time. Its basically a different way of scavenging the fumes back in to the motor to burn em good and thourough like.... supposedly they are VERY clean running engines.

I duno, I can't really argue about polution from engines...I just think everyone should stop wasting their time trying to improve on what we have, and spend that time coming up with different ideas. We have the technology to make very clean combustion engines but its never going to be good enough.

thats a very good point. with merc. they came out with that nice inline 4 and 6 ,dohc, 4 valve with a superchager and intercooler hp ratings from 135 to 275 in a out board. meet all the carb and epa needs. looks like they will buy more lower hp 4 strokes from yamaha.specs are here http://www.mercuryverado.com

on a p.s.
i can't see how they are going to get cats to work on a inboard motor with a water cooled exhaust to help stop fires.

ROFLMAO! Cats on an inboard would be suicide.... Go to the evinrude website and read about the E-TEC line. It actually EXCEEDS the 2008 CARB and EPA standards... IT's a 2 stroke motor.. Lighter and quicker than the merc and yamaha 4 strokes... I saw a commercial on TV about it the other night and looked... It's pretty neat.

it is. the new company owning ev. and johnson are a very comitted company to helping keep the air clean. but on a side note they went 4 stroke turbo in their p.w.c's. and seems like a lot of other company's are going 4 stroke out board and they are taking off big time .
i spent time on the hudson river for fleet week with the coast guard units and almost all their newer boats have bigggg honda 4 stroke out boards that the operators love.
it's just a cat on a inboard and the heat generated = more fires.

On "weed eaters" in California any two stroke 40cc and under will have a catalytic converter, the Stihl FS 250 is 40.2cc, no cat and runs great. Gas scooters must have an approved motor in Calif from 2000 on, the Toro lawn mower I have is two stroke and 15 years old, i'll never give it up, have spare rings and piston for future use.
