Hi,
I have an '87 f-150. The volt meter only works when it is wet out in the morning. The parking brake was broken so i never used it. I repaired the parking brake last weekend. now sometimes when I set it the brake light will come on and sometimes it won't. Going do for lunch today, I had brake set and truck running voltmeter not working and brake light off. When I released the parking brake, it bangs back pretty good and the voltmeter came up to were it should be. When I stopped again and set the brake, the voltmeter was still working and the brake light worked. Is this a ground problem, is there a grounding point for the instrument cluster somewhere behind it? or is there a common point between the parking brake switch and the voltmeter and or brake light? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
You are thinking the right way so far. There are several ground wires that attach to the lower metal brace of the dash board in the area of the park brake support and inner firewall. If this doesn't solve anything, you will probably have to remove the face of the cluster and remove the guages and bulbs to clean the contacts and simply reinsert them.
Good luck,
Phillip
Basically, the best way is first by sight and then by touch. Most ground connections are screwed down with a sheetmetal screw, and,in plain sight once you get into position. Simply look at it and touch it.If its dirty, you will see it.If it's loose, you will feel it. Finding shorts and broken wires is a little more tricky.
