I'm a little over-whelmed with aftermarket parts and ideas to help me get more HP and better fuel efficiency out of my 2001 F350 PSD.
Here's my plan...from what I've learned so far.
1. do the air filter mod with that Napa filter and removing the OEM airbox
2. install the SuperchipsMicrotuner 1705
*is this just a "plug it in an go" thing?
3. have an MBRP 4" stainless exhaust installed (or comparable exhaust system)
These seem to be 3 of the most important mods to immediately increase performance and fuel economy. Is all this compatible together, or will I have trouble with something. Can I install the Superchip myself or does it need to be programmed by a pro?
Guages man! you need some guages to monitor what the SCMT is doing to your truck. At least a pyrometer to display EGT's and its also a good idea to go ahead and get a boost guage and a tranny-temp guage. The 4" exhaust should keep the EGT in check, but in my opinion its always better to be safe than sorry. Also, in my inexperienced but well-read opinion, you should do those mods in the order of 1,3,4,2; with 4 being the guages. Good luck.
Ditto on the gauges first. I wish I had done my gauges before the intake and BTM so I could have seen the difference they made.
You wont need anyone to do the SCMT for you, its a plug in tuner. You plug it into your OBDII connector under the dash then it will walk you through downloading the factory program into the SCMT and then up loading whatever setting you want into the computer.
Just be prepared KSims1868! You're opening up a can of worms.... once you start tinkering and adding more torque you're gonna want more. It's addictive, very addictive.

I'm kind of worried that I shouldn't add anything. I've read a lot of people warning against trannys burning up, engine failure, turbos busting, etc.. after adding these mods.
I'm not doing any towing. All I really want is the increased fuel efficiency and a little more power is always a good thing, but I don't need it.
Those are all things that come with the territory, but as long as you take care of your motor and tranny you will at least prevent it to some extent. To be honest, engines failing and burning up tranny's can happen to anyone even those that leave their motors alone. IMO the add-ons are too much fun to ignore and leave off. Even if my motor or tranny were to go I would still feel like it was money well invested!
i gotta say... i had the gauges first because everyone on this forum said so... and they are right... i am really glad that i had mine before i got my predator tuner... one thing i noticed IMMEDIATELY.... the boost gauge ROCKETS UP.. with the predator 60 & 85 tunes loaded..! my mule used to build boost pretty quick, (i had already disabled the wastegate actuator), but now... just step on it maybe halfway down and you have boost coming out your ears...!
i gotta tell ya kwik... after i got all set up i went down to get some stuff at home depot... as i'm pullin' in, a dodge goes by me with a "magnum", (heh, yeah right..!), and dual exhaust... he's makin' a lot of noise, but he isn't getting anywhere fast... i just thought to myself... "sorry charlie... i got that BEAT...!" lol...!
I have to honestly say... i can't really describe the difference this predator has made... night and day.... i didn't really understand how UTTERLY CONSERVATIVE the factory tune is...! now i KNOW...!
KSims,
Like Flinn said, it comes with the territory. I think it's all in how you take care of your vehicle. If you're going light to light with your foot in it constantly, then yes, you're going to smoke your trans in no time. You're talking about 500+ ft/lbs of torque here. That's no joke. If you're just looking to gain better performance than definitely add a tuner or chip. It's worth it. If you know that you'll only be getting into the throttle on a rare occassion then you'll be fine. With my tuner on the 60hp setting, I can get to work AND home on what it would normally take me to just get to work. If I keep the RPM's under 2k and creep off the line I get amazing gas mileage. The tuner makes a big difference.
