Fuel tanks
I have a small yet significant problem that I would love some help figuring out. First the background: I have a 1978 F-150 4x4 lifted 2" sitting on 33'X12.50/r15's. I have the 400cid with a holly 600 double pumper on. I get about 14-17mpg (I've calculated this many times because even I don't believe this brick gets that good of mileage). The problem is this: When I fill up my rear tank, if I don't use it and it gets warm outside the tank will spew gas out onto the ground out the vent on the cap. With gas prices in excess of $2.30 a gallon, it's just not practical to let this continue.
So, I'm guessing that the vent in the tank is causing problems because I've already changed the gas cap. Because of the age of the truck, I'm guessing that the tank should probably be replaced, and the front tank needs to be replaced as well due to a hole in the top of it. So, here's my question for you all, where can I find gas tanks for these trucks without paying an arm and a leg for them. Any help would be great. Thanks guys.
I don't see any reason replacing the tank unless there is something wrong, i.e. rust or holes.
I'd check your front one, it might be a hose leaking instead of the tank, or the seal between the sender unit and tank.
Yes, check and service your vent for the over flowing problem.
