I will burn this 2005 F-150 up in bout 10-12 months and therefore hate to put a $500 exhaust on the truck for someone else. What are my cheaper options for a good sounding exhaust without going for a $500 cat-back stainless system? Is there a good muffler replacement out there? Not looking for performance, although performance, economy, and sound are always plusses. Thanks FTE.
The cheapest way that I can think of would be to completely remove the muffler and just put a coupling pipe from the cat back to the factory diff crossover pipe. My boss has his pickup set up that way, and it doesn't sound too bad, but it is louder than one that's got a muffler on it. I've got a Flowmaster kit on my 2004 5.4L that sounds pretty good (at least to me). Regular Turbo mufflers that a lot of exhaust shops sell aren't too bad either, they cost a little less, but don't boast the performance of Flowmasters or similar mufflers.
I put a flowmaster series 50 SUV (3" inlet-2 X 2 1/2 outlet) and used pre-bent (mandrel bends) from summit racing (and some cutting and welding). Brought the exhaust out in front of the rear wheel. Cost me around $150 to build and sounds good, although a little too quite.
