Transmission lines....

I have a few lines that run to the tranny for cooling, as you guys probably all ready know, and They start out as metal lines and then it looks like somebody along the way cut them and put rubber hoses and clamps on. It's been quite sometime since the old owner did this.

I'm wondering should they be metal all the way through?
Are these high pressure lines?
Would I get better performance?
Does anybody know where to get these solid lines?
How can I bend them if needed or do they come bent in the right places?

I have a "Bloody" mess under there! I've sealed all the small leaks from the engine and ready to tackle this......oh by the way, I have a 300 I-6 and believe the tranny is a C-4, it's a 67' f-100 flareside.

Regards,

mines the same way but it looks like somebody plumbed in an extra tranny cooler (other than the one built in to the radiator). Stupid ruber hose leaks all the time.... is there a rubber hose that won't get eaten by atf?

Ideally, yes, though they have to have "S" and "curves" for stress relief or they will crack or split from the vibration and movement of the drive train.

> Are these high pressure lines?

They should be, if it costs $6-8 a foot it is transmission line.

> Does anybody know where to get these solid lines?

Bend them yourself from brake line stock or find them in a junk yard are usually the cheapest ways.

If you do not use a barbed end or double flare on the end of the metal transmission lines they will leak. You can double flare (single will probably work - I double flare them) the ends of the metal lines and use high pressure clamps (not the worm gear type) to prevent leaks.

If you have to have rubber lines because of drivetrain movement, ideally, all the rubber lines will be up front under the bumper where you can easily see and change them.

I just replaced the lines in a 65 F-100 with a auto, Used 4' brake lines that were premade straight and bent them around the trans and the engine. Put a "s" curve in front of radiator and then hooked to radiator cooler. Cost about $10.

What size are the connectors at each end?
I'll go to a junk yard and get some brake lines, are the stock lines on a 67' f-100 w/ a 300 the size on both ends?

I believe they are 5/16" lines. If you are going to replace them, cut the line back of the radiator and take the fitting and a piece of the line with you to the parts house.
