hi everyone, i was wondering what i should do about my rocker panels... i live in alaska, and we get A LOT of rain.....they are starting so show rust on the bare metal, behind all 4 tires.... well, to get the bedliner stuff sprayed on them, it will be about 600.00. has anyone tried anything else to help this? thanks for any ideas in advance !!!
IMHO, I would use POR 15 - it's easy to use and it stops the rust. Drill holes in the bottom of the rockers and treat the inside too.
Unless you eliminate the rust, the spray on will start peeling in a fairly short period of time because the rust will be trapped behind it... basically, you would slow it down a little.
Dont know if this will help, but I got a gallon can of Herculiner bed liner and sprayed it on my long bed using one of those textured ceiling hopper guns. Looks just fine, though it discolors in the sunlight unless you add the UV protectorant too. I've been tempted to spray the bottom 12" all the way around but haven't yet.
The Herculiner is a pricey moisture-curing polyurethane containing small bits of rubber, but I would think any similar polyurethane black paint might work too.

I second the POR 15 method. Once the cancer is there, you have to get rid of it or it will come back to haunt you again and again and again. Just ask my 1976 Camaro......
it is a 99. it has the square "sticker" pieces on them, i assume that ford does that since i have seen others like it, but i am getting too much crap thrown up and even they are peeling back, and some of the rockers are down to bare metal.
The Ford mud flaps do a great job keeping stones from chipping the paint. I would put some on after you get the rust taken care of. I have 119,500 miles on my 1999 F-250 driving in MN and the flaps have worked well.
thanks for all of the advice guys, i will try one of those methods, and definately get some mudflaps. i want to upgrade to 33x12.5 tires this fall, so i will really need something then !!
