No they are not electric fans, but talked to a mechanic at Ford dealer. He said there is a relay for the fan clutch.
Um,the fan clutch is a mechanical device, which does not require electricty! Either the Ford tech is playing a joke on you or hes an idiot!
Now,the fan clutch does have a thermal winding on the front side of it,which in part works with an internal silicone substance, hence operating the winding to increase or decrease fan speed........thats the best way I know how to explain it without getting my books out and reading them.
Are you having an over heating problem?
yes, these last 2 days have been alot hotter in wis than the last month has been. Ive already done therm, serp belt, flushed radiator. The truck runs fine for the first 30 min the starts to run hotter esspecially with the air on. Cannot find a new radiator any where near me until monday.

Did you yourself flush the radiator? If there is a clog in the radiator only a professional can get it done correctly. What year is the truck? It is very possible the fan clutch has gone bad.My 97 F150 needed a new fan clutch in 2001.One tell tale sign I new the new fan clutch was working is upon take off it sounded like an airplane taking off;it never made that sound with the old one.
I purchased something that your supposed to dump in radiator and its supposed to clean it, of course it didnt work. The truck is a 99 with 96,000, and i havent heard the fan clutch kick in for a week or 2, but they say that shouldnt madder when your going 60 miles an hour down the road.
I'd suggest a professional radiator clean-out. They can flow test it to be sure the work is needed prior to doing it.
As BOF mentioned, the fan clutch might be bad, but it is just a mechanical device.
There is a relay for the AC compressor, but nutin' for the fan clutch.
You won't ever hear the fan clutch "kick in". I'm pretty sure it is a viscous-coupled clutch, so no on/off modes exist.
They can, and will whine some - especially it seems - in cold weather.
You can spin the fan blades by hand and get the feel for how it works.
(Just make sure the engine is off first. Don't need a Darwin award winner!)
thanks brian, i just went ahead and pulled the rad and put a new one in,surprisinly it only took alittle more than a hour. This site is actually pretty cool with all the help from others, will tell lots of ford people about this site. thanks jim
