I am tearing down a 59 Ford with the 223 six. I would like to hear the motor run before I remove it. I can get it to spin using the starter, but have been unable to get oil pressure. In fact, I have yet to get oil up to the filter or into the boss that feeds the mains (I removed the plug and checked.)
With the FEs we remove the dizzy and use a drill with a homebuilt sort of shaft to spin the oil pump to get oil up to the top of the engine before we start it the first time. Can something like that be done with these old sixes?
I primed my 300 after rebuilding, by stripping down an old spare distributor I had. you MUST remove the drive gear on the distributor for this to work. I drove the bare distributor at modest speed with my drill. Worked great.
I read some where to prime the oil pump itself before installation. I dumped oil into it before installation. If you didn't prime the oil pump before you installed it you may still be able to prime it by squirting oil into the oil filter holes in the block. If you can get some oil down onto the gears it should form a seal long enough to suck up some oil and maintain the seal.

If I understand what you are saying, using an old dizzy is the only way to spin the oil pump? On the FEs the pump is driven by a 5-sided shaft so all you have to do is remove the dizzy and find a way to spin that shaft. Mostly you use a socket on a long extension driven by a drill. This will not work on the sixes?
223 is a little different then the FE, 223 has the hex shaft attached to the distributor, but you can spin the pump with a hex shaped shaft in your drill
