my f150 runs for about 4 miles and then it starts to give me problems it cuts in in out like its going to die and then it quits. i think it might be over heating but im not sure are there any suggestions out there.
I don't think it is the thermostat, does your water temp guage work to verify this assumption? I need more info on what is happening because i own an 86' f150 efi and understand the fuel system very well. Does it do it on both tanks? Is your fuel filter very old? Is the charging system working properly.
The fuel filter is certainly a likely candidate. When the truck sits the sediment or "crap" in the tank settles but when the pump activates things get stirred up and this "crap" could certainly stiffle the fuel flow through the filter. I have an 86 302 EFI and I have had this problem before. It certainly is a cheap first shot at fixing the problem. Good luck.
On my 86 it's located on the drivers side framerail. You will need to get under the truck on the drivers side. Look on the inside of the framerail probably about 1/3 down the door (just a reference). If it's the same as mine you will see a cannister probably 3 or 3.5 inches in diameter. It screws off and will be full of gas so be careful. Also if you do replace this filter make sure to use some grease or something to hold the big O-ring in place in the cannister groove. If it does not seat well it WILL leak. Hope this helps.
The canister filter which is in the black cylinder looking object toward the back of the pickup inside the frame rail can just be tossedyou don't have to replace it. Just put the bottom of the canister back on and make sure the o-ring stays in place so it will not leak. The main filter is inside the frame rail towards the front of the truck right before the high pressure pump the filter is sivler and very easy to change. Make sure you relieve the pressure from the fuel rail, you will still have fuel run out but it will not spay on you as bad.
efif150. I just crawled under my truck and snapped an image of the filter I am referring to. This is the one toward the front.
Look at this last pic in my 86 revived gallery. Just click on afree in my response and then select view gallery from the drop down.
I have to disagree with f150hotrod. I would never remove a filter and toss it.
