I have a 98 Xtra cab 4x4 with about 89K miles that has recently developed a front end noise. Hopefully someone out there can help me diagnose it. When coming to a soft stop and when starting back up I'm noticing a kind of crunching nosie/vibration. Once I'm moving it seems fine. The steering is nice and tight and I have fairly new (less than 12K ago) lower ball joints, and stabilizer bar links. The crunching can be felt through the steering wheel more so than heard. It also seems more noticable when I take off turning to the right. This is my first post although I've been visiting this site for quite a while. Any help or direction is greatly appreciated.

Yikes, I don't know, how are the front brakes? Or maybe a wheel bearing, though not likely to be felt at the wheel. CV shaft? Upper ball joints will crunch when the truck leans forward or back, or when turning. (Can't rule out lowers because they're new.)Just trying to throw some ideas out there. Let us know. Good luck, Rob.
I brought the truck to a local Ford dealer. They say the inner and outer tie rods and lower ball joints need to be replaced. I can almost buy the tie rods given all that I heard about the problem these trucks have with them. But the ball joints were replaced only 14K miles ago. This is not a work truck and sees little use, about 7K per year. Does this sound right? Any help/opinions are appreciated. My next question is how big a job is it to replace the tie rods? It doesn't look too bad.
