i was wondering if anyone could help me out. i have an 85 F-250 that i have been driving for five years. the problem is that I need to sell the truck, but it has a salvaged title and after reading up on some stuff on the internet i'm not sure i can sell my truck for what i think its worth. i haven't had any problems since the wreck four years ago except for the normal wear and tear of a twenty year old truck. can i sell my truck for what NADA says or should i just keep it cause i wpn't get a good price for it. any feedback would be great, thanks.
AJ10: The salvage title is a signal to a prospective buyer that the vehicle has suffered some damage which was enough to be reported. As I understand how it works is that your insurance company notifies the state of the damage and that you have been "paid off". From friends in the car biz, this has a negative effect on the value of "newer" vehicles but not so on older ones.
That said, you can ask what you wish for your F 250 and if someone wants it they will buy it from you. The fact that a 20 year-old truck has been in an accident should not be as much of a concern as how well it was repaired and the fact that you have been driving it for the last four years since the accident without a problem.
I personally purchased a 3 year-old car sometime back with a salvage title at a GREAT discount. Ran that car for 10 years and then it was stolen.....
Another thing that happens, I am told, is when vehicle manufactures buy back a car under the "Lemon Law", fix the problem and resell it, these vehicles are also identified on the title as a "buyback". One I looked at had been bought back because the electric windows were too noisy????? oh please... Sounded O.K. to me but the car was too small for our needs...
Well I bought my truck under a washington rebuild title, and still
today i have yet to figure what for, other than the guy i got it from
said that the upper radiator brase got damage in an accident that
was reported to the state patrol. Maybe thats the key reported to
the state patrol. humm.

I think they call that a "core support." What triggers a salvage title is an insurance claim that totalled the truck. You're right, of course- sometimes it doesn't take much apparant damage to trigger a total.
aj10- the important thing to remember, from a legal standpoint, is that you disclose the salvage title. It'll pop up anyway, this just keeps you from getting sued later. From there you could give a reasonable explanation of what the truck is...or isn't, as the case may be. Since it's an older truck, it may not have much impact on the price. On a late-model vehicle, no lender will touch a salvage title, whjich has a huge impact on the selling price.
Salvage title Any car or truck that the Insurance company estimates damage repairs are more then value of vehicle, or close. So if truck was in accident and value was considered less then cost to repair it or close the Insurance company will pay lower amount and total it. The only time it really comes into play is if it is a valued vehicle say 65 mustang Shelby gt350 then it is a big issue have to check history of vehicle to see if vins where swapped. but if you have pictures of before during and after and all paperwork is complete and in order will sell for a little less then if was a clean title. Also sometimes can buy from Insurance before title it as salvage. Just be up front about title when selling and their shouldn't be any problems
On a 20-year-old truck, I doubt anyone would really care whether it was a salvage title or not, as long as the truck runs. Brother's blue '85 had some sort of condition on the title also--can't remember if salvage or what--the truck runs fine. The only effect it had was that the dealer priced it down to about KBB value, rather than more usual 50% markup. My guess is what others have said--at some time it was in an accident and insurance decided repairs were more than the truck's value.
