engine swap
Most likely you have the dreaded 2.9 cracked heads, and if it has been driven any length of time with the water in the oil, the bearings are probably on the way out so you have a good candidate for a swap there.
This is subject that has been covered many times here, and there are whole sites on the 'net devoted to it. You can do a search on "Ranger 5.0 swap" and turn up a ton of info.
That said, I'm in the process of a 5.0 swap in my '89. I elected to build my own componants rather buy them (I'm cheap) but there are kits available.
Your 2.9 has EFI, how about the 302? Is it carbed or injected? Swapping to a carbed engine is much easier in terms of wiring.
What trans do you have now, and what do you want to run in it? Auto or stick? Is it 4X4?
Here are a few links, including one to some pics of my own swap. The 3rd one, HPE has en excellent book available. Good luck, and have fun with it. -TD
