I've noticed a lot of vehicles with the 300 sound different from others, mabey caused by other problems. I looked at a friends 96 model, and its very quiet at idle, and when you rev or drive it around, all you hear is grunt noise. Its seems like there are some modifications on this particular model, compared to my 94, like different sensor locations, and emissions control units. Anyway my truck is a little louder at idle kind of light a light diesel noise and it also has that familiar grunt but whith a noticeable high pitched hum noise, and doesnt sound as deep. Ive notices a few econolines driving around that sound the same. It seems interesting to me. Would minor alterations to the engine from year to year or even from factory to factory actually change the "sounds of the engine". Or does every engine sound the same from start but slowly distinguish themselves from normal wear and tear, vacuum, fuel mixture, timing etc?
I don't get mutch of a diesel sound at all. I don't get much of a grunt either. I do, however, get a nice roar when I rev it in neutral. (I'm really starting to think I have some tune-up issues to deal with) Any way, the main thing that I hear from inside the cab is fan noise. Belt and bearings seem fine, but unles I rev it, I hear fan.
I had problems with my smog pump pumping gas into my exhaust so my cats are shot. I replaced my bulging muffler with a glass pack. Thing sounds like my old man's old 400
A nice deep grunt under load. Not much quieter with no exhaust at all.
