Help adjust my rockers please.

I just installed adj. rockers and 427 pushrods from DSC. 390 with Crane 901 cam. The Christ book says .100-.200 clearance with lifter collaped, but my notes from this forum says .052 or a #55 drill bit. If I set it at .052 it looks like it will use just about all the threads on the rocker. Where should I set them.

The way I do it, is get it to where all the slack in the valvetrain is taken up, then go one turn in for preload. You dont need a lot.

I was kinda wondering about this myself. I did mine by going 1/2 turn after removing all slack. I've searched some but haven't been able to find any instructions for the adjustable rockers when used on hydraulic lifters on the FE engines. If I remember correctly, on chevy's we always would adjust with the engine running...back off until the rocker starts to click...tighten up until the clicking stops and then slowly go 1/2 turn more. Do you think 1/2 turn is not enough?

I start at 1/2 turn then go 3/4 for the ones that appear to still be loose. Usually by then, most any clicking is gone.

If it's a new cam I'd go one full turn. They have a coating on 'em which, while not thick, does wear away during the cam break in.

Chevy's you can adjust 'em with the engine running, since the adjuster nut doesn't move. Dont try it with this setup, you'd probably never get the wrench on it. Even if you do get the wrench on it, watch it flop around and fly off.

hmmmmm....I might start it and tell my stepson to do the adjustment just so I can watch him trying to do it...lol. Seriously, I don't want to run it with the valve covers off anyway...I want to keep this engine clean for at least a few minutes. Since my engine does have a new cam and lifters I may go back and tighten up the adjustment to a full turn.

'stang.......I think I'll leave my valve covers off on start up. I want to make sure the top end is oiling and that the lifters are rotating. As soon as I'm sure I'll shut it down and put the covers back on, and finish the break in.

I like the sounds of checking the top oiling before closing everything. I may take your advice on that.

'stang........I read in the christ book that sometimes the lifters don't rotate right off the bat, so you have to spin the pushrod to get them started the first time. Are we having fun yet????????

'stang......back to adjusting the lifters. I can see where if you don't have the correct preload on the lifter it might not want to rotate. What do you think? Maybe we should give um a nuther 1/2 turn.

If I remember correctly..one turn on the Adjuster is .040" .045" I think? I remember checking that on the 433 motor.. with a V block and a Dail indicator on a stand..

How about this:

cylnder on TDC.....tighten adjuster while spinning the pushrod with thumb and fore finger until you start to feel resistance.... then one full turn...

otherwise how do you fully collapse the lifter to check the lash with a drill bit...? I have seen a special tool that was basicaly a handle that grabbed onto the rocker that would then let you bleed down the lifter so you could measure valve lash... but that was for a 351C motor...

I thought the valve lash for an FE with a hydraulic setup was zero!

As for running the engine with the valve covers off. I would not even think about it with an FE. You will lubricate evrything within 5ft if the system is working. If you want to verify everything is working, just prime the oil pump with a drill and socket/extenstion (make sure not to loose the socket).

As for adjusting while running. I'd pay to see that on an FE..should be pretty funny. here's this guy with oil all over the place and himself, trying to put a wrench on something that's moving up and down a few hunderd times a minute :-)

Yes, but the question is how far down is the plunger in the lifter body.....By completly colapsing the lifter plunger and then measuring valve lash you can presicely set that depth...
