I have a 83 f150 with a 302 out of a 74 van, It runs fine and then just dies, after a few minutes of foul language it will come back to life for a few more miles until it does it again. A couple of months ago I replaced the ignition module and it ran fine until now. I am very seriously thinking about replacing the breakerless system with a good old point setup. Does anyone out there have any experience in this field? Any and all input would be greatly appreciated. THANK YOU
I would try the ignition module again, the stator could be trying to fail also, its whats inside the distibutor, I had an 81 Big Bronco that did about the same thing as yours, I changed the ignition module and the stator at the same time, one of them fixed it because it ran fine afterwards , But I don't know which one fixed it. neither of these are expensive parts. I can't remember if the armeture ( thats the spoked looking piece under the rotor ) comes with the stator or not. Might change the ignition coil too, if you don't know if these things have been changed before. Don't go back to the points! The Duraspark system is a fine ignition system, you have just got a bug in it somewhere. Its pretty much the coil, stator & armeture, ignition module that does it all with this system.
Fords sometimes have electrical problems that are intermittent, caused by poor body ground. Check your body ground, and make sure the conections are good. During operation with poor body ground you will get feedback throught the electronic igntion and guages. Causing modules to burn or overheat. The module you bought should have a 5 year 50,000 mile warrenty.
I could be wrong but I think it sounds like a coil problem. If it basicly cuts out after it gets warm, and then will run after it cools down (even for a a little while) that would probably be the coil. If you have a spare coil, try it, other wise, if you buy a new one I would get a Highperformance one that way if it wasn't the problem you at least improved something.
I just installed Duraspark on my '84 Ranger ( it now has a V8) and the whole set up was made up of the modual and wiring off a car in the junkyard that hadn't had a hood over it in years and has no engine and the dist came off another car. Even though the modual is so curoded that the sealing on the bottom is loss it still fired right up and runs great.
