I'm getting close to installing gauges, and I want to ditch the stock oil pressure, engine temp and ammeter gauges in the process.
I'm thinking 3 on the A-pillar (top to bottom) pyro, boost, engine coolant temp - and 3 on on top of the dash over the radio (L to R) oil pressure, ammeter, AND an air filter restriction gauge???. I don't need a trans temp gauge because I have a 5 speed.
I once saw a dash mounted air filter trestriction gauge over at SP Diesel's site, but no more.
Has anybody seen one available elsewhere? Or is it worth bothering with? What else would you guys put in the 6th guage position?
Don't bother with the air restriction gauge, put a decent intake on instead (Tymar, Kwik, etc). I'd still use a trans temp gauge even with a manual, if not there, I'd put a temp gauge in the rear differential. Can't ever have too much information! I have a buddy with temps for manual trans, transfer case, and both differentials and it has saved him some money over the years. Easy to see from rising temps when something is going wrong...
Oil temp gauge a good idea. A buddy of mine used one oil temp gauge for his front and rear diff, X-fer, tranny and engine oil. he had a multi-position switch that he could select and read the temp from whatever he was concerned about..
Where do you install the temp probe in the ZF 5 speed?
I'd tap in to the tranny cooler lines if you have one, I'm not sure if the five speed does or not, the six speed does. If not, I'd weld a bung on the inspection plate or drill and tap the case itself (make sure it's below the fluid level and in an unobstucted area where it can't be hit by internal moving parts).
