Door Handle Problem - Help please.....

....I have a 2000 XLT. When it was six months old I ran into a problem with the drivers side door handle / latch. It would open, but when I let go it just sort of flopped around without retracting as if spring loaded.

Took it to the dealer and of course it worked fine.

Five years later - now it sometimes opens and then just sticks. It's as if the the door handle latch is atttached to nothing, the door won't close, if it does close it won't open with the keypad or the remote and you have to open the door from the inside. It will unlock manually with the key.

This happens and then five minutes later it will be fine.

I have to fix this - my four year old daughter got locked in the truck with the motor running ( AC was on ) yesterday for 20 minutes while I got my extra key.

Help please......

five minutes later it will be fine.

Misplaced my keys

OK - I finally found some stuff in search.....

Do I need an actuator and lock or just the actuator - or is that the problem?

Could somebody help me out with this one please - the exterior door handle doesn't retract and just flops around. Can a bad lock actuator cause that....

No. I don't believe the lock actuator can cause this. Sounds like you have either lost or broken off the rod that runs from the door handle to the door lock. There is a spring in there also which could be broke too. Take the door panel off and have a look.

That's why I'm confused - it feels like it is normally spring loaded - then the flop around thing happens and the door won't close - then I mess around with the lock / actuator and it starts working again.

Sometimes when I open, then close the door the exterior handle retracts but without much force - not completely loose and floppy - just not secure.

I guess I'll have to take it apart and look at it, but if this is part of a bad actuator problem I'd sure like to have one on hand to install while everything is apart....

Any ideas and comments welcome - thank you....

I still don't think is is a bad lock actuator, which is only for the power locks. I now think that your latch is somehow sticking.

Good point and that's what I'm thinking, but I've lubed it good and it still happens.

The really confusing part is that it is intermittent. It will malfunction, then I get the door to close and latch by moving the latch mechanism in the door with a screwdriver or whatever I have handy. Then the door won't unlock or open except with the key or from the inside handle. Then I drive it for ten minutes and everthing works fine again.

I agree with you that it seems like something is sticking.....I just can't figure out what...if the spring was loose it wouldn't work at all....

Thank you for your help....
