Strange Noise

1990 F150 300 I-6
4X4 5 Speed Manual

In 2 wheel drive when I am driving and let my foot off the accelerator I hear this horrible noise that sounds like I am putting my transmission in gear without using the clutch. It is a horrible grinding noise coming from either the transmission or the transfer case. To make the noise stop I would either give it more gas or push in the clutch. It all happened after a night of off-roading. My transfer case has a leak and the fluid got low for a while, but even after I topped it off it still made this noise. I cannot tell if it is coming from the transfer case, the transmission, the driveshaft (front or rear) or anything else. I drove it in 4 wheel drive and I didnt hear the noise at all. If anyone has had this problem please help, I cannot figure this one out.

Oh and today it started to make the noise with the clutch pushed in when I was downshifting, I pushed in the clutch and downshifted from 3rd to second and when the clutch was still engaged it made the grinding noise, before it was only when I let off the accelerator.

just added- I was pulling into my driveway tonight and I was going about 2 miles an hour with the clutch pushed all the way in and when I downshifted into first gear it made the same sound,it sounded like I did not have the clutch pushed in at all.

Just a thought check your pinion for slack on the rear diff. I've seen a lot of this where the pinion nut gets loose and allows the pinion to crawl back on ring gear and hit the spider block under deceleration. It sound like your trying to engage a manual trans with out the using the clutch.
