Around here (Minn)most every hardware store carries 5-20 in Havoline, Valvoline, Mobil 1 and others, by the bottle or by the case. And I believe they all meet Ford Specs. Read the label to make sure.
The big "farm" stores have it too and of course the Ford dealer.
take a closer look at what they say in the ad it says use the oil where these specs are required nor does it ever say it is api sm rated it just says it meets api service sm. amsoil is very good at screwing with people minds i will never buy there oil just because of that and its a MLM company.
FWIW... recently bought an 02 SCrew w/ 5.4L... sticker on window stated 10w30 (changed @ the stealership)... two weeks ago changed filter & oil (5w20 Mobil) and now i'm getting nearly 2 mpg increase
Yes, for some reason Wally World doesn't sell the Motorcraft oil any more. Rumor has it that Ford wanted to support their dealers, who couldn't (or wouldn't) compete at $1.42 a quart. It is a great oil, but as others have said, there are alternatives.
Whenever I run through the Motorcraft I bought at close-out, I'll probably go with this new Mobil 7500.
Ford went to 5-20 to meet government mileage specs; oil clearances in the engines have not changed. 002 is the basic spec. for bearing clearance. If you want to use 5-20, use synethic; if not use 10-30

What mileage specs? I don't think their plan is working. What kind of mileage would I be getting with 10-30? I sure don't need to use more gas then I do now. I ave. about 11.5 towing and 13.5 empty using 5-20. I am not in love with Ford Motor Co., however I don't think they are that bad that they'd reduce the life of our engines for some quarter of a mile per gallon or something. If they would stoop to that, I want nothing to do with them! IF true this would be my last Ford.
BTW I am very happy with my '05 SD V10. Had it since March 1 and have 6000 plus miles on it.

there is no need to use a 5w20 synthetic just use a regular 5w20.
all manufacturers are working hard to meet the government specifications for mileage. going to 5-20 rather than 10-30 may give a small increase in mph but when factored in to the entire production of vehicles, every little bit helps.
I realize that all manufacturers have a vested interest in their engines lasting; if an engine fails, the owner will blame the manufacturer rather than the oil. Still, when it hits 100 plus degress in the summer, that 5W-20 seems a little weak. 2004 Ford F-150 owner's manual specifies synthetic oil. Synthetic oil handles temperature extreems better than petroleum based oils.
bottom line: changing oil regularly is as important, if not more so, than the type of oil used.
These engines are cooled by liquid and temp is maintained pretty much the same in -40 or +100. If the cooling system is working properly the "liquid" including the anti-freeze and the oil should remain close to the same temp. Summer or Winter. Overloading the engine by towing too heavy, racing and or working it to hard in the mountains is another story because you may overwhelm the cooling system.
So... if 5-20 is correct it should be correct in all seasons. Does Ford tell you to change to a heavier oil if you live in South Texas or Phoenix or use a lighter oil yet if you live in Fairbanks AK?
