Your symptoms and the rapid clutch cycling are indeed indicative of a low charge. What the cause is for the low charge is anyones guess. You could get an el-cheapo recharge kit from Autozone or the like and try a recharge yourself. If it holds then no need for additional service, but if not, you probably need professional help to pinpoint the leak. Dealers and other AC specialty shops have halon sniffers that can track a leak down.
