300-6 Noisy under load

This problem surfaces when I have the engine under load. I hear what sounds like leaky exhaust or headers not a pinging issue. I can hear each piston. I checked around the exhaust and intake but cannot confirm any leaks. Mileage is down but the engine still has speed on flats but it is hard to make hills. It starts right away. I have checked compression and all are up to spec and very close to eachother. I checked vacuum and timing, new plugs and all the rest of the tune-up parts as well. A friend said that it could be the timing chain has slipped and the valves may be opening too soon/late.

Any ideas. 1981, carb, 4-speed no electronics other than the duraspark module.

Thanks
Coastal Trucker

There is no timing chain, just gears.

Check base timing AND mechanical timing advance, this is critical for 300's, also check using a differente ignition coil...

Checked timing by setting up TDC on #1 piston manually then checked timing to see if balancer was off. It was ok so I checked timeing with new light and adjusted no more that 2 deg. No change. I read in this forum that there is a discrepancy in the choice of timing marks on the 300 engine. I marked mine when I verified the TDC and used the passenger side marks which I understand are the correct marks. At least that is where it indicated when I checked TDC. I keep going back to mechanical slippage such as the timing chain as this wasn't an overnight change but appeared slowly.
