I have a 2004 6.0L SD Crew Cab w/22,000 miles. Over the weekend I had a two times when the power steering appeared to fail. The power steering would basically go into a non-assit mode when turning a corner at about 15MPH. It would take a huge amount of effort to get the truck straightened out. Once I was going straight again everything was fine. As with all F250 problems this one is intermittent. Anyone had or heard of the same problem?
Not related to the above but....
Already had a complete tranny rebuild at 19,000 miles.
Check engine light goes on after about 100 miles on highway. It will stay on for about two days then go out. Dealer (Don Kott Ford) said their is no problem and just to live with it unless the truck starts running poorly.
Looks like yet another trip to the dealer
"Built Ford Tough"...Umm, yeah right!
Thanks for the site and any help anyone can provide
Is your idle a little low, is the belt/pulley clean? My 00' does this too when I'm moving at idle and I believe the pump is not spinning fast enough to build enough pressure to help. A possible fix is to change your pulley size. Several truck owners are going through this.
Dump Don Kott! Find another dealer to do your warranty work. If your engine light is coming on, "live with it" is not a good answer for a so called valued customer.
With just under 15000 miles on my truck, my 05 just about steers herself. The way you have described your steering gives me the impression that it needs attention too. I suppose that I am very lucky having my dealership. They have always been very good about going full length to keeping me happy with my truck.
Further North by the state line, just south of Lake Tahoe. I use the dealer in Carson City Nevada. Give Wade a call in service if you wish to take a drive up here. He's pretty good when it comes to taking time to take care of customers. He does get busy though. Actually I have had good experience with all of the guys there.

The problem has occured while accelerating through the corner rather than coasting through. However, at this point anything is possible so I will mention what you said when I get to the dealer.
olfordsnstone, I am through with Don Kott by the way. I truly could not believe that they told me that. I actually bought the truck from Power Ford in Torrance, CA, but they didn't have a diesel mechanic for over a year. They finally have one so I'll try them. I should have bought it at Kiefer Sons Ford in Mojave or in Ridgecrest.
Also, I didn't mention I also needed a new turbo, ERG valve and three of the four A/C vents have broken. I'm not hard on this truck at all and basiaclly got it to travel to our home we are building near Lake Isabella, CA.
Frankly I feel stuck with a truck I cannot trust that's outside of the lemon law period.
wow this makes sense, my truck is at the shop as we speak getting a lift and i will be running 40" tires, so the tech tells me i should invest an extra $1,200 on a hydraulic ram assist because the super dutys have a bad gear box and steering, I guess he wasnt joking hhmm.... Im glad i went for the ram assist
That is not necessarily true, there are Ford boxes running all over this country with STOCK tires, accruing millions of miles on these trucks ....collectively.
They are trying to sell you something, which you may or may not need for the 40's

actually, i was initially planning on spending around a thousand on a brake upgrade, then he told me he'd rather see that money go into the gear box because the super duty has really good brakes which i agree they feel real strong. I guess its more me trying to go broke on crap i dont need haha oh well good thing i dont have kids. (to young and stupid) Ill be posting pics of it once my truck is finished.
All the Fords I've ever driven seem to have a problem w/ the pwr steering. Including being non-functional and loud groaning. I hope this SD is different.
Fords older style pumps were notorious for whining, and even if they still used that style pump I doubt if you would ever hear the whine over the 6.0's purr.

Regarding the above two quotes, if the power steering of "all" Ford Trucks are really suseptible to being "non-functional" boy do they have a huge problem on their hands. Regarding "whining", I can live with that, it's "steering" that I'm having trouble with. .
I got in contact with the factory complaint line yesterday. They said that safety is their "utmost concern" and that they will do whatever possible to correct the situation for me, since I told them I can no longer trust the truck as being a safe vehicle to drive. We will see what they actually do. I'll keep you all posted.
I my truck does a similar deal on cornering. Seems like the powersteering fails then comes right back in a split second then fails and comes right back. Kinda like the steering wheel is pulsating left to right. I think its the valve's in the pump.
