I have a few running posts about my 4.6L triton in my 98 f150. I'm having an extremely hard time tracking down the reason for a cylinder misfire. I have replaced the plug in the faulty cylinder (5) and replaced both coil packs. I've covered the connections in dielectric grease. I've pretty much figured out that moisture isn't the issue on my rig considering it has been sitting for a few months covered and has had plenty of time to dry out. I'm starting to wonder if my motor is running lean. When I pulled the spark plug is was white and ashy. From what I understand that means I could have the incorrect heat plug in (doubt it...ford replaced them originally) or it could be running lean. About a year ago I got a code that said I had a faulty exhaust sensor on the drivers side bank. Then, it up and went away. So I didn't worry about it. Now the code I'm getting is a misfire on cylinder 5 which is on the drivers side bank and a white ashen spark plug. Think this could be my problem? Anyone replaced one of these sensors before? Anyone know how much they cost? What a pain. I long for the days of carbs and leaded fuel.
My first guess on this issue would be a fuel injector that is plugged in the inlet screen, pull the injector out of the rail and look into the backside of the injector, looking for dirt, rust, anything that can clog that nylon injector filter in the back of the fuel injector. Since the plug is coming out white, I would say you have compression which would eliminate the issue of valves being held open by the valve train, and you have ignition, which is why it is coming out white-ashy. Not enough fuel in the cylinder. Not a sensor issue. They are not hard to change though. Cost from Dealer is roughly 85 dollars. Hope this helps you, Broken Wire
got pissed off at my new wires. they have about 5k on them. i decided to take it apart at the boot and WA-LA! that thing was burnt beyond recognition. slapped me a super conductor on and poof, all fixed.
