O/D off light

I have a 95 Explorer 4x4. Yesterday the o/d off light started flashing. I looked in the owners manual and it says if this happens I need to get the vehicle serviced. Anyone know what kind of service it is talking about or how much I should expect to spend.I have noticed today that the trans seems to downshift harder when I slow down but otherwise seems to be working ok. About a month ago my front drive shaft was shaking really bad so I took it off because I can't find a shop around here to fix it. Also, I just made a 2,200 mile trip half of which was towing an eagle talon on a tow dolly. About 200 miles into the trip the transmission fluid smelled like it was burning a little. I stopped immediately, put a trans cooler on it and had the trans flushed. It seemed to be fine on the rest of the trip. Now its got this o/d light issue. I am going to try to find a trans shop to take it to this week but any insight would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Blinking OD light on the 95s happens quite often. There are many posts about it on this board. Mine comes on once or twice a year, at which point I disconnect the battery for 5 minutes to reset the codes and it's good to go. When the light does come on, the trans goes into 'limp/cripple' mode which results in extra hard shifting, which is not good for the trans. Once the light is out, the trans goes bad to normal mode. If you take it to a trans shop they will tell you that you need a rebuild which may not be the case. Try disconnecting the battery to reset it. If the light keeps coming back on, then get it checked.

I will definately try that. I certainly can't afford a rebuild. Thanks

I've got a '95 Explorer 4x4 6cyc AT with 112k. I was driving home (3 miles) accidently in 2nd instead of D on the automatic. Suddenly the OD light started blinking and it would clunk when the rpm's hit 1000 or so at the stop signs. I removed the neg battery cable and let the system reset. It seems to work fine for now - I'll report any additional problems if they occur.

I would recommend pulling the codes next time the od light flashes. Disconnecting the battery only clears the fault and returns your transmission to normal mode. The codes might give someone a clue to what's going on.
