I had a front blow out on my Firestones the other day so I had to put the spare on which has never touched ground. I decided it was time for the 285's so before I went and bought them I measured the 265 on the front. The static loaded radius of the 285's is a 1/4" higher, {15-1/4" to 15-1/2"} and the on truck diameter is .800 taller with the 285's. My question is, is it worth the $98-$102 {dealer quotes} to get the speedometer adjusted? Do they put in a generic number for the revolution's per mile or do they actually measure by chalking the distance to figure actual circumference? The tire manufacture for my 285's says 628 rev's per mile. Does anybody know what the number is in the computer for the factory 265's?
Thanks, Antelope V-10
my 04 was still about 1mph fast with 285... was almost 4 mph i beleive with the 235's, at about 55 mph (per police speed limit indicator signs they love putting up.
This may be obvious, but before you spend the money on recalibrating, maybe you could use (borrow) a handheld GPS to measure your speed and compare it to your speedometer. Like the fella said, maybe it will be spot on with the 285's.
It's up to you whether to correct any difference, but personally, I wouldn't worry much about whether I was going 70 or 72. Or if I had 100,000 miles or 103,000 miles on my truck. I guess you don't want to be speeding, though. But in the grand scheme of life, knowing our exact speed is really not that important (to me)
