I have an '98XLT Explorer-AWD 5L-V8. 42,000 miles. the transmission starts to slip at 35-40mph when the overdrive tries to kick in, and when the OD gets turned off it re-engages. After about 20 minutes the OD light will blink. I have had the codes read at a local shop P0741,P1728. I was told they need to drop the pan to test the connections internally, but they were non commital to how long they would hold the car. They mumbled about getting a tranny from a wreck. I paid for their diagnostic time and left. Should this be a repair for the dealer? (they told me a tranny from Ford is $2100 plus $900 installation) ,a transmission place like AAMCO? ( who won't charge for diagnosis but will want to recoup their advertising budget by selling a rebuild for $1500 and an extended warranty), or a local shop? (price is same as a franchise). Assuming the trouble can't be found, is a rebuild of my tranny better than a replacement rebuild or a replacement from another vehicle?
I do not know which tranny I have but it is not the one with 55 in it. What is a typical cost for minor repair as opposed to a swap/rebuild? What warranty should be offered?
Thanks for any assistance.
