I have developed an annoying noise from under the hood (fan belt/pully) of my 03 Ranger 3.0L, just out of warranty of course.... lol How can I determine if it is serpt. belt of a pully?
To Kens suggestions I'd add, check your idler & tensioner pulleys for side to side looseness, or roughness/noise in the bearings, if you find any, replace that pulley.
I had a criket like chirp on my 94 3.8L Taurus that turned out to be the idler bearing. It had ever so slight "play/wobble" in it, upon removal & inspection it was oboviously worn slightly, replacement fixed her up. It had about 70K when the chirp began.
Since last fall, I'm running a Dayton "poly cog" belt on the 99 Ranger, thats a little quieter than the OEM one, don't know how it'll last yet. Have read others have good luck with GoodYear "gator back" belts for quietness too.
Also check your power steering pump & fluid level. Fords pumps are sometimes noisey & if the fluid is low, it will be.
When I changed the Taurus P/S fluid & flushed the system with "SeaFoam", the pump quietened down nicely, has been two years now & still nice & quiet.
Just some more thoughts for consideration.
My 88 ranger is always whinning..tranny/engine..whatever. I think that seems to be 'normal' from what Ive heard and read.
My wife calls it a 'singer sewing machine'...lol. Sux tho.
