Even though I've had my truck for almost 9000 miles AND run an SCMT, I have never really 'stood on it' to make it go, not even beating someone off the line. This afternoon I was on the freeway (hiway 80, 4 lanes each direction) on my way back home when I noticed that some of my cargo was coming loose Being too far from an exit I pulled over onto the right shoulder to secure it. This landed me a new problem though, the traffic in the right lane was moving at 70+ and the vehicles were pretty close together. So I found out what this truck (with SCMT) was REALLY capable of. I looked for the biggest gap (between an SUV and a big truck) in my rearview, then I timed it so I could powerbrake my way back into traffic. Held the tach at about 1500 to get the boost going, then when I saw my opening I let off the brake and floored the gas.
My poor wife in the passenger seat never saw it coming. She was leaning forward and was THROWN hard back into her seat as that 7000 lb beast accelerated so quickly into traffic that I had to slow down to avoid hitting someone in front of me Man I wish someone was standing there to give me a 0-60 time on that one! To make it even more fun I caught the wide-eyed "WTF?" stare of several other drivers near me.
I was impressed with the 6.0 before but now I realize that I can tow 20,000lbs if need be AND accelerate much faster than I should. Truck, tank and Corvette all rolled into 1... Thank you Ford (and SCMT)!
BTW - this was on Tow Safe Mode with about 400lbs of cargo in the bed.
I am kicking around getting the SCMT - do I have to get EGT guage, exhaust, etc? What if I never put it in the top HP setting? I have 36K on the truck and really don't want to hurt it. I have read a lot about coolant blowing out and head gaskets not being able to take the increased HP - thoughts? I really would rather not have to mod the exhaust or risk drilling pre-turbo.
Sabow, same concerns here. This is the reason I've never "stood on it" in the past, I have the stock exhaust and no EGT guage. I will be getting the guage installed and will leave the exhaust stock. I also don't want to drill the exhaust and paying someone to install teh guages is too expensive, so my compromise will be to get someone to install just the pyrometer sensor, I'll do the rest of the install myself. As for other things like coolant blowing, none of this has has happened to me and I've already driven it as hard as I plan too. THe worst thing I've gotten is a bad case of teh turbo farts
I advise you to read through the SCMT Tuner thread here and use the info you find there to make up your mind. Installing any aftermarlet performance part is always a gamble, you just have to determine if the odds of a problem are worth the payoff to you. FOr me I can't go back to stock mode, it feels like I'm driving a UHaul when I do.
He is running the SCMT not the SCT. Drilling pre turbo is too simple to be scared of. If any chips did enter the turbo, it would probably be right upon the first start up after drilling and the turbo wouldnt be at any speed as the initial exhaust blew it thru.
I am currently running the SCMT in Tow Safe, which for some reason I can't explain in my truck runs WAY better than HP for low and mid-end power. Plus I can tow my boat without having to switch the tune.
Its not so much drilling pre-turbo that I don't want to do but everything I've heard I have to go through to get to the spot to drill. I've read a few people have gone so far as to take the left exhaust header off - it's not worth it to me to have to go through that. If there is a really simple and easy way to tap pre-turbo without removing a bunch of other stuff I'd do it myself.
Check the mounting position for my probe (03/6.0) in my gallery.. EASILLY drilled/tapped from the 'bottom up', plenty of depth for the probe tip, easy lead wire routing ect.. Also, drilling this spot means most/all of the chips 'drop out' while being drilled, or can be removed no sweat..
I took the President of our company out to pick up his buisness Explorer being smogged.. He said that he will be ordering an 06 after his vacation.. He was impressed on how quite mine was.. I said it was until it is powered up!! followed by a hard acell. through the first three gears.... Think he SOLD!!!

Ok I'm confused what is the difference between the SCT and SCMT - are they both Superships Micro Tuners? I was looking at the Superchips tunner for tranny and engine.
SCMT is the Superchips tuner for engine and tranny. I don't know what SCT is but I made the same mistake posting here some months back and was also immediately corrected.
Totally different companies with uniquely different tuning philosophies. Motorhaven sells both--Call Ken and ask him the difference--or email him--he'll gladly answer your questions, I'm sure.
