I have a '95 F250 4x4, I have an automatic hub lock that is partially engaging is this repairable or do I have to by a new one. If repairable how do I do it.
It might be worthwhile to disassemble that sticking hub and clean out all the solidified grease that is probably there.
You should have a manual when doing this job to make sure that all the internals get put back together right. With the manual, standard hand tools and with some solvent this job would take about an hour.
Installing manual hubs will fix the problem permanently but you will need at least two special hub nut tools, the new hubs and a hub conversion kit. This job is easy enough to do, but you need to know how to properly adjust 4WD wheel bearings before starting.
I am about a month behind you guys, but in reading your comments I wonder if this is the same problem I am having with my 93 F-250. With the hubs disengaged when ever I make a sharp turn (or as sharp as this beast WILL turn) I get a lot of hub noise and it feels like gravel is in the bearings until I straighen it out for a while. I have the instructions and have been tryng to decide whether to clean and rapack or buy manuals.
I also went with manuals for the same reasons, Locked, unlocked, real simple. I like it better than just hoping I hear a click. Once I drop the shifter into 4x4 and the hubs didn't engage and got my stuck in sand.
