I have a 95 F150 4X4 with automatic hubs. I had the front wheel bearings repacked at 39,000 miles. Shortly after that I moved from Alaska to Arizona. While moving an occassional noise started in the left front wheel. The noise is high pitched and changes with the speed, so it sounds like it is caused by movement in the drive train. I ususally hear it between 15-30 MPH and only after the truck has been driven a few miles. Sometimes it goes away for several days. I took it to a Ford dealer who lubed the dust seal on the LH outer spindle. The noise stopped for about 2000 miles, then started again. I went to a different Ford dealer who repacked and adjusted the front wheel bearings. All this did was change the noise to a lower pitch. Anyone have any ideas?
I had a somewhat similar problem on my '96 with the factory automatic-locking hubs. Sometimes after disengaging from 4-wheel, and after backing up 15 or so feet, I'd sometimes get a noise like a chain turning that wouild increase in pitch with an increase in speed. On two occasions, the one hub tried to lock it and I'd hear and feel a very loud bang. Two different dealers tried to fix the problem on two different occasions, but their fixes were always short-term. I switched to manual hubs -- Warn Premium hubs I think they're called (instead of a plastic center piece, they're brass) and the problem was solved. It's been two years and I've had no problems what so ever.
If you can afford to do it, pitch the auto-hubs they aren't much count. They WILL fail when you need them most, ( I found mine not working on our first 6" snow fall last winter, and they had worked fine the winter before ) mine would hold with the Big Bronco jacked up and spinning the wheel, but put it on the ground and have it in 4-wheel drive & they would slip. Made a horrible racket. Installed lock outs and it never had another bad day. Nows the time to change them before the snow starts flying.
I have a 1996 ford f250 with the auto hubs. The hubs were replaced by the dealer when I had 6000 mile. The frount left hub would not unlock. I curently have 54000 mile and the problem is back and now i hear a ratcheting sound followed by a bang when slowing to a stop. I'm current trying to collect data to go back to Ford for this problem. I found Technical Service Bulletin 97-6-27 which Ford has addressed the problem. Any one who would like to be part of my e-mail to ford please reply. Ford should fix this problem not us.
