Need help with 460 problems.
My dear old mother has a problem with the 460 in her 1991 F-250 4X4. She had it replaced with a factory crate motor about two years ago, and it has never had the power that her old motor had. Any attempt at setting the timing at normal levels results in excessive detonation. She has taken it back to the Ford dealer that did the installation as well as her own mechanic many times and all are baffled (including me). It's been tuned-up several times, but always with the same result: no power and excessive pinging.
Could there be a chance that Ford installed the wrong cam in the new motor? Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The timing chain could be off a tooth, or more likely the distributor could be off a tooth. I would be more inclined to say the distributor. It can sometimes be a real bear to get in correctly.

I would agree with Trail_Rider, I would be checking the distibutor as it would have been disturbed in the motor swap, and the spark knocking your describing sounds like a timing problem. Good luck!
