Bought a 2003 Ranger XLT Level II and it only came with one key... Is there a cheaper alternative than to buy a replacement chipped key from the dealer for 75 bucks?
But you will still have to get it programmed for about $50+ because you only have one key. (You can only program it yourself if you already have two keys). Some locksmiths have the equipment to program the keys. I think most charge less than the dealer.
While you're at it, I'd go ahead and get another key cut and then program it yourself. That way, if you lose one, you'll have that second key to be able to program a third one.
I bought one on ebay for the exact reason noted above. I think the seller uses the name amazingkeys.com. He's happy to talk to buyers and answer questions too.
depending where you live (in terms of crime), you could just make some regular copies and tape the chipped key to the inside of your steering column. I think the chip just has to be in the vicinity of the ignition, not in it. Obviously you may not want to do this if you live in a sketchy area.
Someone has posted on here how to "program" the keys yourself. A mechanic did it for me at the dealership for free while I waited. He did a bunch of weird stuff in a certain order and it seriously took 3 minutes. If you look around, I'm sure there are online instructions.
Look on eBay for "Ford Ranger keys" (you may have to experiment a bit to find them). Then look on the sites that come up for instructions on how to program the keys.
I bought 2 keys that way and programmed them with these instructions.
Check out the "read first tech info" thread at the top of the fourm. But you must have two working keys to program anymore keys into the system, else the dealer or locksmith can do it.
