hey all. going onto either 169000 or 269000 miles on my 69 ford f100 with a 390. just wanted to know if anyone had done this and where would be a good place to get the entire kit ie bearings gaskets ringsetc. the cam and the crank are both ok i'll have those machined and the block honed out. thanks for any and all help
Might I suggest you check with your machine shop, they can usually get pretty good pricing and know what you need. You should also go with a new cam and lifters, unless you mark exactly which bore the lifter was removed from so you can put them back in the same place.
don't order any engine kit until after you have it to your machine shop. These old blocks tended to wear the cylinders a bit, requiring a bore job and oversize pistons, also, if you need oversize bearings, you will want to wait on that as well. a good place I have found for parts is www.naparts.com, they sell US name brand parts at a good price.
P.A.W has low priced rebuild kits in different stages. Some are just bearings, rings and gaskets all the way up to kits that include the pistons, crank and rods. They don't advertise name brands, but I have used them and you get Hastings rings and Clevite bearings. The cam in my kit was a comp cam, but I am sure they substitute all the time.
When I rebuilt my 360 I priced everything out several different ways and when I got it to the machine shop their quote for the parts was less than I had been able to get.
that's a smart way to go, I was able to beat my machine shop's price by $100 with a kit from Northern Auto. It pays to shop around, there's no doubt about that.
Northern Auto Parts is great. I got the kit for my 400 from them and it was here in a week (shipped free, I think, too).
Do get the block prepped first before you buy, and be aware if you're going to have them build the short block, that some machine shops (at least one I know of) won't warrantee a short-block that wasn't built with their parts. Something to keep in mind.
If you do purchase from Northern (I bought a trans kit from them so I can't complain) be sure to get the 4V car kit, it will provide a better/hotter motor than the low HP truck engine.
These Guys had the BEST PRICES I found when I Rebuilt my 390, last mounth. They have a web site and you can order online . http://www.enginekits.com/ek/
