Well, I have decided to fully rebuild by 360. I am having the block hot tanked and probaly bored 30 or 40 over. When I start to re-assemble I will not be keeping most of the old parts. I like the sound of using 390 rods and a 390 crank with 360 pistons so I will most likely do that. With stock truck heads what will I be looking at for compression with this setup? Also, I will be adding a new cam. The old one is really wore out. With a c6 what would be a good cam to use that would rough up my idle some but not make it too radical for street use? I will be using this site for help all through this build. The amount of knowlege here is far more vast than any other automotive forum I have ever been to. Thanks everyone for all your help.
I believe the comp ratio will be about 9.5:1 with the 360 (car 390) pistons. There are a lot of cams to compliment this setup. the Crane 343941 being one of the more popular choices for a slightly hotter FE build. I don't believe the idle is very rough. But, most cams that give a rough idle, aren't really for a mild FE build in a truck.
Try the search feature in this forum and you will see many similar 390 builds.
You will be looking at about 9.58 cr with the parts you said. I suspect 91-94 octane will be needed. A lot of people say they want a slight lope for their mild builds, but cams with lope are generally too big for mild builds.
I have noticed everyone is off the 343901 bandwagon but with the c6's gear ratios of 2.46,1.46,1 and rearend with 3.00 or 3.25. I think a smaller cam is better for burnouts, and of course low rpm power, torque and throttle response.
*I may be biased to smaller cams since my truck is 4wd and heavier than most of your 2wd racers.
Well I finally decided on the Comp Cam XE274 cam for the new truck 395ci motor...It will give up about 14lbs of TQ at 2500rpm but from 2800 to 6000rpm it more than makes up for it...
But I dont suggest that cam for everyone.....
