I was coasting today down hill around 50 MPH and the engine was making a strange surging sound almost like it had a gnarly cam in it, it really loped, the rmps were around 1800-1900 and it kept a steady tach reading. The strange thing too was my truck didnt shake like it was surging or anything, it was a pretty long downhill so it did this for maybe a minute to a minute and a half. Any ideas what could have caused this?
Do you think it's an engine or transmission thing? If you were coasting foot off throttle the injectors would not have been firing, so what the IPR was doing would not have mattered.
I'm not too up on the auto trannies, but I remember reading about alot of coast clutch failures a few years backs....seems like it was prevelant in the 99 and early 00 models. I was also thinking maybe it was the torque converter locking and unlocking?
I suppose it could be a transmission problem, next time im going down that hill i'll put it in nutural and see if it makes that sound again.
The strange thing was my engine was silent during this decent, which it usually would be, i had the foot off throttle and coasting at 50 mph.. normally it would be as quiet as a mouse.
