4-Speed to an Automatic?

Well, im getting really tired of always having to shift through the gears in my truck, and my old t-18 is getting pretty worn and hard to shift, so i was thinkin instead of going and finding another manual tranny i would just drop in an automatic

So i need to know what i need and what is involved in the swap...i really need a tranny with an overdrive, but im not sure which one that is?? and are hurst shifters universal, because i have a nice hurst ratchet shifter that came off of a chevy 350 tranny...will i need to modify the crossmember? will i need something to cool the tranny? will i need to modify the driveshaft? how much am i looking to pay for this kinda swap?

i can say that the hurst shifter will work. I looked in a summit magazine and looked under hurst ratchet shifter. it said TH-350, TH-400, Torqueflight 727, c-6, and c-4. If you want a transmission with a 3 speed and an overdrive than your going to want a c-4. But if your truck carries big loads or is lifted than you'd want a c-6. The c-6 is heavier duty but is only a 3 speed automatic without overdrive. You probably will need to have your driveshaft modified because the tailshafts are probably different lengths depending on application. As far as crossmember, i wouldnt know what to say you might have to make or buy a new support brace for the tranny.

the most weight i would carry would be a dirt bike or 2 in the bed, but thats about it...do you think a c4 could withstand that?

yes i think that a c-4 tranny will be fine for it. by heavy duty i had meant like pulling horse trailers or so forth. So yes i you will be fine. having the c-4 also gets you more mpg because of the overdrive gear

A C4 does NOT have overdrive, nor does a C5(C4 with a lockup converter.) The non electronic O/D trans is the AOD, and even came stock in these trucks....

The AOD is a C-6 with over-drive, essentially. A tough trans, and worth the install if you want to go from standard to automatic. A good trans shop can also do some flow work and add a trans cooler and shift kit if you're looking at pulling heavy loads. I ran a 1 ton cube van during my courier years that had such work done to it, and it stood the test of time very well(well over 800,000 km's) under some pretty work intensive situations.

If you have a standard, and want to convert to auto, be prepared to live with the clutch pedal in the way, or find a way to get rid of it. For someone looking to add a standard where an auto was originally in place, have even more fun adding a clutch pedal and linkage.

My own recommendation, replace what you have. I'd rather go through the conversion of replacing a non-OD standard with a newer/same year OD standard, than replacing it with an auto, and for the already auto-equipped, look at rebuilding with a mild shift kit, trans cooler. You'll find the conversion much simpler, and a lot CHEAPER!

JMO, maybe, it's easier to convert from standard to auto, than the other way around, FYI.

Wrong again, the AOD is based on the C3, the OD trans based on the C6 is the E4OD...

As for dealing with the pedals.. that's easy, grab a pedal hangar and pedals from a truck with an auto, same with a column, very easy...
Everything on these trucks is very straightforward, as the basic parts were designed to be universal when the were bolted together in the factory.

i just got done doing a swap from aod to a 3spd with overdrive manual

your cross member will stay the same but you will need to turn it around
remove your linkage from clutch ,change starter to auto starter get an auto fly wheel and it will bolt in .
if you go with an aod get the kickdown linkage because it will not shift with out it
if you have n e more questions drop me a line at ford7232702@yahoo.com
