Replace or Rebuild?

I have a 66 Ford Truck and want to know what is the stock engine that comes with the truck? It has a 390 in it already. It needs to be replaced should we go with another 390 or a 302 AOD? Which would be a better performer or workhorse?

You will be better off going with the 390 if you want a workhorse of a truck.

Came with the 352FE if you have a VIN of F10D, looks just like your 390.... The 390 won't need a new tranny and won't be overworked by the truck.

390's an FE block. It can make as much horsepower as the 302, but WAY more torque, and at realy Low RPM. My 3 speed will pull from a stoplight in top gear, and it's a stock motor. The 302 is a great motor, but it's not a big block, and it's not built to do the things an FE block will do.

I have a 390 in my 57 and really enjoy the power. However, I do not enjoy the gas mileage. I sometimes wish I had a 302. The only other problem I have with the FE is parts seem to be a little more expensive, and not nearly as accessible as a small block. But like I said, I do enjoy the power when I have to pull a heavy load!

Stick with the 390 you'll be happier in the end.
