Type F to Dextron?

I want to convert my C-6 to Dextron and was wondering if it could be done without pulling the whole tranny apart.
I haven't looked but can you reach the torque converter drain from the front of the converter?
I also want to adjust second gear band! I tried to search and got frustrated one day so I thought I would throw the question out there.
What is the easiest way to adjust the band?'
Any help would be great.
Thanks, Ken

You can just drain the fluid out of the torque converter and pan and change to Dexron without taking apart the transmission. For at least a little while. After a short time you'll be removing the trans for a rebuild because if it requires Type F and you replace it with Dexron it will slip and destroy itself. Dexron is slipperier than Type F.

Casey,
Thanks for the reply.
I thought I read somewhere on this board a while back that Dextron would be better to run in the C-6 than Type F and it was suggested to switch to Dextron when you are rebuilding the tranny.
I will probably stay with Type F then.

Friction materials used before May 1976 are not compatible with dexron. If the transmission was built after that date you should be using dexron III. If the transmission was rebuilt after that date it may have the late type friction materials and will use dexron III

Rclarke,

Thanks for the information.
I wasn't aware of any of this.
I will stay with type F until rebuild.
Thanks, Ken

as far as your other questions.
The TC has a drain bolt in the front. There is an access plate on the bellhousing you remove, then disconnect your coil, and bump the engine until the bolt is accessible. It is kind if hidden in a hole in your flexplate.

To adjust the band, you remove the band adjuster locknut and throw it away. It is a one time use nut as it has a rubber seal on it that will be ruined. Do not try to reuse it. Then you tighten the band adjuster to 120 INCH lbs. Then back it out 1 1/2 turns, reinstall the locknut while making sure the adjuster does not spin. Tighten the locknut to 50-60 foot lbs. You may need a crowsfoot wrench for that.

Dex can make the newer units run like a million bucks. A pre-1977 C6 should behave fine on type F. I think there was a problem with the seals in older units swelling up and cracking if Dex was introduced to a type F unit.

Learned another hard lesson. Mercon V will slip and leak like hell in a 1977 & later C6. Basically, if putting clean Type F or Mercon in as specified won't solve your problems, upgrading to newer fluid might make them worse.
