you can't beat epoxy paint for virgin garage floors- the prep is well worth the finished job. i used to split wood on mine, and the majority of maul strikes merely glanced off with no damage.
I used the Rust-Oleum kit from Home Depot. It came with a citric acid mix to use on the concrete with a scrub brush. I scrubbed mine twice. It was amazing how much dirt come out even with a new house. My concrete was new and never had been driven on or stained. I've heard that it is better to use muriatic acid on heavily stained concrete but that requires more protective equipment to use (rubber gloves, shoe covers, maybe some type of respirator or heavy ventilation). After that, let the concrete get really dry (at least a day in a dry climate) and then paint on the epoxy. If you don't do a good job with the prep work, then hot tire pick up is more likely to happen. My coating has been through one Las Vegas summer and we are into the second with no problems yet.
