Help please

I have a 94 7.3 Turbo IDI,and yesterday it started to have problems starting.I have to crank on it for a while to get it started, once it is running it runs fine.just trouble starting up.I replaced the injectors this past winter and changed the fuel filter this morning.Could this be the mech pump? ANY help would be great! Thanks!!

Maybe you have an air leak around the return caps on the injectors? Sounds like it may be loosing it's prime. An air leak in the return system can syphon fuel back to the tank.

Does it try to start and die the first time? That's how they like to do it. You can do a little test for this. Take some small hose pinching pliers (or vise grip) and pinch the small return hose that comes off the fuel filter and goes down near the injectors. This is the line that likes to syphon your filter dry. Let it sit like that overnight and see if it will fire the next day.

Could be glow plugs if you only have this problem for the first start of the day.

You can also put a clear hose on the line from filter to #1 and IP to #2 to see if air is entering and from what side. There are also seals under the cap nuts on the steel inlet lines to the filter head and from the filter head to IP.

Visit........ http://www.intellidog.com/dieselmann/idi2.htm and do some reading re filter air leaks.

Very good Dave! Yes it could be the plugs, got sidetracked on the fuel system.

Does it put out a big black cloud and roar to life after about 30 seconds of cranking?

Could also be a slow starter.
We all forgot to tell you that the starters do not like to do extended crank sessions.
My last one was over 400 dollars at NAPA.....but it does have a lifetime warranty.

Wonder if I should tell them I am gonna drive this truck for another 20 years?
