1993 4x4 reset button question

1993 4x4 reset button question
Hi. Having some trouble with my 4 wheel drive. Tried to push the reset button in the l/r wheel well. A red led light came on next to the reset button. What does this mean? Thanks.

I don't think that's really a "reset" button. It seems to be more of a diagnostic button, but I don't remember the specifics of using it. When you push the button you either get a solid light or a flashing light. One means everythings ok, the other means that the 4x4 computer detects a fault.

I was having some trouble with my 1991 Ford Explorer transfer case and talked with a service tech up hear in Alaska about it. He told me about a test you can perform to the processor board that is located in the rear left access panel next to the jack and rear windshield washer container. In has 2- wire harness pin connectors attached to it on the left side. If you remove the 2- wire harness pin connectors and turn on your ignition switch. Now you can push the white square button on the bottom edge of the processor board and it will turn on a red LED right next to the button. If the red light flashes this means you have a problem with your actuator motor assembly. If the red light stays bright this means you have a problem with the processor board.

Now when I fist had the problem of 4WD non-engagement, I played with this "reset" button and don't recall what it did - flash or steady - but the LED did light. The 4WD then worked again for about 3 engagements then died. I had to rebuild the assembly and replace the plastic stop bushing, as described on the aforementioned web site. Everything is hunky dory now.
