How do I get the u-joints out?

I pulled all the outer snap rings out, pulled the Drive shaft out, and have it sitting there. In the manual it makes it seem like I put a socket on one of the sides I pulled a snap ring from, and on the opposite side I put a different sized one, and put it on a vice and squeeze them toghter?

I finally got both the U-Joints out. My question now is the new ones look like they are to big to slide into the yoke/drive shaft. Is this normal? How exactly do I go about getting them in, or should they just slide in? After They get in is there anything else to do?

compare them to the ones that were taken out. where did you get new ujoints? take old one to store if in doubt.

you need to press them in using vise and old pieces that you just pressed out. doesnt your manual describe how to do this?

i will walk you through this:
position the spider in yoke, do not screw up pins inside cap, do not let other caps fall off spider, start spider into bearing cap then partially install other cap, careful with pins, use old caps or sockets and vice to seat caps, reinstall new snap rings, grease.

go have beer.

good job

Question:I have everything ready to go, except on the drive shaft that connects to the Rear end, the u-joint has a tiny bit of play side to side. Is this going to be ok?

I have greaseable u-joints, and we are out of grease. My question is would it hurt to drive like 10 minutes on it to get to a autoparts store.

they have enough grease in them to drive to store. i do not under stand where the play is in joint. where the pins are or where the u joint bolts to rear end?

If the U-joint cross shifts back and forth longitudinally in the U-joint yoke, double check that both snap rings are firmly seated within their grooves, and not just "floating" in the yoke above the grove. Basically you are checking that the cups on the end of the cross are fully pressed into place. If this all looks OK, and the side-to-side shift is slight (less than 1/16 inch), then it is probably OK.

Radial slop, on the other hand, is unacceptable. There should be no lost motion as the driveshaft attempts to rotate.
