This has me stumped. When I get down to 50 miles to empty I go and fill up. The gas pump stops around 22 gals. I have a 28gal tank. So with 6gals still in the tank and 50 miles to empty does this mean that I will only get about 8 miles to the gallon on what is left in the tank. In my 03 Expy when I got to 50 miles to empty I had about 3 gals of gas left. Has anyone else run into this problem.
Thats exactly my experience/observation as well. Though, the fuel guage is not all the way down at that point, and gives a little better picture of the actual fuel situation ...
One explaination could be that it calculates the 50 mile warning based on the worst possible fuel economy i.e. 8 mpg. So you've got 50 miles more to go even if you somehow start getting a really bad MPGs. So that the warning will almost never be wrong. Had Ford decided to generate the warning based on the *current* MPG reading then any subsequent fall/decline in MPGs would not be accounted for and one could run out of fuel in less then 50 miles - which would then open doors for litigation and Ford bashing ...
Distance to empty is calculated using a running average fuel economy, which is based on your recent driving history of 800 km (500 miles). This value is not the same as the average fuel economy display. The running average fuel economy is reinitialized to a factory default value if the battery is disconnected.
Thanks, I guess it is better to have a little more gas at 50 miles to empty then a little less and then run out of gas before I even go an extra 50 miles.
I just traded my 03 Expy for a 05 Expy and I noticed the same thing (first fillup today). I put 20 gallons in and it said I had 70 miles to empty? go figure.
